Blair Simonite

Blair Simonite teaches entrepreneurship and innovation at the Sauder School of Business and is Program Director of [email protected], a university-wide initiative that helps UBC entrepreneurs build successful new ventures. Blair has more than 30 years of experience in the technology industry, spanning startups to multi-nationals. Prior to joining UBC he was COO/CFO for Recombo Inc., a cloud software firm that provides customer onboarding solutions to the financial services sector, and for ACL Services Ltd., the global leader in audit-analytics software. His career includes senior management and engineering positions with multinational companies Duke Energy, Cerberus Pyrotronics, and Honeywell.

Chris Reid

Dan Wanis Ruiz

Daniel Wanis-Ruiz is a Venture Manager at the Creative Destruction Lab West. Prior to joining the Lab, he conducted mental health research as a consultant for counselling organizations in Vancouver, held marketing positions within the fashion industry, and volunteered with non-profits such as Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Synaptic Health. He received a BSc from the University of Calgary in natural science with specializations in mathematics and biology and recently graduated with a masters degree in health policy and leadership from the University of British Columbia.

With over a decade of experience in research, design, manufacturing, and business, he brings a diverse set of skills to any project - some of which include microfuel cell systems, low-cost solar power, and a beautifully simple water filter called Tapp. Kevin thrives when he takes large challenges head on and leads projects to success with creative solutions.

Tony Yang

While Tony was pursuing my B.Sc. degree, one of his mentors suggested that he should consider pursuing an Engineering degree to enrich his theoretical studies in Physics and Life Sciences. Consequently, he began his graduate studies with Chemical and Biological Engineering. With a team of scientists and engineers, a microfluidic electrochemical biosensor, which could be used to detect Tuberculosis, was developed as part of his Ph.D. research project. In 2013, he founded Elite Mentors Association, a BC-registered non-profit organization that provides an opportunity for motivated high school students to explore potential career options in Science, Engineering, Business, Marketing, and Performing Arts.

Under Darrell Kopke’s leadership, Lululemon grew from a tiny store in Kitsilano to a billion dollar conglomerate with a globe-spanning reach and reputation. After leaving Lululemon, Darrell has founded three successful startups which have grown into multimillion-dollar companies. In addition to his entrepreneurial experience, he has prolific management experience as CEO of four different companies. He has also shared his views on creating abundance from generosity on Tedx as a featured speaker!

Ian Bell

Ian has a wealth of experience in technology evaluation, business develop- ment, licensing and company creation, having spent over 17 years in academic technology transfer at the University of Calgary (UofC) and University of British Columbia (UBC), Canadian provincial and federal government, industry and as an independent consultant. Ian holds a Bachelor of Science with specialization in cell biotechnology from the University of Alberta and is currently a Technolo- gy Transfer Manager at UBC’s University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO) where he manages a large portfolio of physical science, materials and medical-device based technologies.
